MUSICIANS RESUMÉS

>> HANS KOCH
Hans Koch has quit his career as a recognized classical clarinetist to become one of the most innovative improvising reed-players in Europe. He has been working with everyone from Cecil Taylor to Fred Frith since the eighties. As a composer he has shaped the sound of Koch-Schütz-Studer since the beginning as well as working for radio-plays and film. Since the nineties he has been working with electronics as an extension of the saxes/clarinets as well as with sampling /sequencing/ Laptop. As a reed-player he is always working on his very own vocabulary and sound, which makes him a very unique voice on the actual scene.

>>JAVIER CARMONA
Javier Carmona is a well renowned drummer/percussionist in Europe and England in the Free Improvisation scene. Along his career he has performed with musicians such as John Tchicai, Evan Parker, Carlos Zingaro and John Russell, among others. He is a member of various formations, including the London Improvisers Orchestra, FOCUS Orchestra, BIB Orchestra, Catatumbo (with Ingrid Laubrock and Olie Brice), a duo with Mark Hanslip, Alexander Hawkins Ensemble, Roland Ramanan Tentet, Perro-Chimp (a duo with Federico Reuben), Rachel Musson's Skein and Vole (with Roland Ramanan and Roberto Sassi). Along with the graphic designer and electronic player Kamil Korolczuk of Oso Records, Javier is a co-founder of a digital label for free download of most types of experimental music. Javier also collaborates with dancers Rosa Aledo and Lehtola Saija of Kicking Louise & Co., a dance company that already performed in France, Cyprus, Spain and England.

>>JOHN RUSSELL
John Russell was born in 1954 in London. He got hold of his first guitar in 1965 and began playing in and around London from 1971. His involvement with the Free Music scene came early, from 1972 onwards, and in such places as The Little Theatre Club, Ronnie Scott's, The Institute of Contemporary Arts, The Musicians' Co-Op and the London Musicians' Collective. From 1974 his work extended into teaching, broadcasts (radio and television) and touring (continuing) in the United Kingdom and abroad, including Austria, Belgium, Canada; Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Luxembourg, Sweden and Switzerland. In 1981, he founded Quaqua, a large bank of improvisers put together in different combinations for specific projects and in 1987 helped to set-up Acta Records with John Butcher and Phil Durrant. In 1988 he was the co-founder of MOPOMOSO, London's longest running concert series featuring mainly improvised music. He has said that, 'Since my early involvement with free improvisation as a way of making music, I have moved closer to the realization that this is the best way for me to work as a musician, bringing together the intellectual and the intuitive with the practical in the creation of a music that is unique to a specific time and place. I also believe that playing solo, in long term and less permanent groups, all have particular things to offer the improviser and I have tried to exploit all three areas whilst developing existing traditions and juxtaposing previously unrelated areas in an attempt to provide a fertile ground for improvising.' As opportunities permit, he has extended this approach to collaborate with creative practitioners from other disciplines, i.e. poetry, composition, theatre and performance art.

'ABAETETUBA'

“A gathering of good people”, a sensation of a timeless gateway with affinities in common, it was the initial point that motivated several gatherings for listening sessions, starting from the year 2004 by musicians from different trajectories interested in finding different ways for their music. During their research they found the Free Improvised Music, which was already solidified mainly in Europe and that still resonated in low frequency in our side, was the determining factor in a first step. The process of making unknown music without the intention of being "new" or "anti" or "definite" and especially the form in how each one can feel the music, unleashed in a fascinating way to be followed. Then it arises a name coming from the indigenous Tupi-Guarani culture that gave the necessary meaning: ABAETETUBA "A gathering of good people."

ABOUT THE SERIES – FREE IMPROVISATION IN CCSP

The Improvisation Festival project gathers musicians from Brazil and abroad. The type of music expected to be promoted through this event is called free improvisation, widespread mainly in Europe and which is characterized by radicalizing experience of improvisation by unlinking it from previously defined structures, whether they are rhythmic or harmonic, unlike, for example, than usually does in jazz, where improvisation respects certain standards and, therefore, is restricted to the melodic framework.
Free Improvisation is not treated as a specific genre, but a collective creation that incorporates elements of contemporary classical music, avant-garde jazz strands, folk music, among others, taking into account parameters that usually stay in the background, as the search of timbres, through a dialogue established at the time of performance.

The project arose as a result of the Experimental Music Festival, held in partnership with the Youth Cultural Center in 2009, as part of another project (Independent October), and attended by figures such as the English singer Phil Minton and the Brazilian bassist and cellist resident in London Marcio Mattos, among others.

The public response has shown that there is a diverse and growing interest in this type of music. Anyway, the festival aims to match this demand, gathering in CCSP improvisers and interested people in general, through performances with musicians who have broad experience in international festivals.

Part of the spectacles of this project are inserted into the regular schedule of music by CCSP; another part of them happens in days, rooms and alternative schedules, taking advantage of the multiple possibilities of this space.
